These learning experiences were designed to focus on the PYP key concepts of function and connection, the lines of inquiry and teacher questions.Inquiries in this unit could lead to deeper understanding of aspects of several transdisciplinary themes.Additionally, the PYP key concepts identified for this unit provided a cohesive context for transdisciplinary learning.
Central ideaIdentifying, using and describing patterns help us to make sense of the world we livein.Age group89 years School settingThis school in IB Asia-Pacific offers the IB PYP and MYP, and will start implementing the Diploma Programme in the near future. The PYP section has 540 students aged 411 from diverse backgrounds. The schools language of instruction is English, and Mandarin is taught as an additional language. There are three classes at each of the six year levels.Gradeyear level planning teams meet weekly with the PYP coordinator for up to 150 minutes. It should be notedthat the visual arts and music teachers taught this unit under the transdisciplinarytheme of Where we are in place and time.This was the third mathematics unit of inquiry of the year and followed a Number unit on place value and the four operations. Teachers needed to have gauged studentsunderstanding of number in order to target this unit at the appropriate level. The transdisciplinary skills, in particular communication skills and thinking skills, were also developed through this unit.Learning experiencesA variety of learning experiences that catered for different ability levels was planned. Students were flexibly grouped and regrouped as needed throughout the unit.
